Frank Black - "Devil's Workshop"
My sons say it's not his best. But I like it. It even has the wife bopping along. Some good crisp songs from the ex-Pixies front man. I must start listening to the rest of his albums - if they're better than this then I'm in for a real treat.

The Desert Sessions - Vols 9 - 10
Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age combines with others, including PJ Harvey. Indie rock with a punkish feel. Haunting vocals from PJ Harvey. Great sounds. Don't listen to "I Wanna Make It Wit Chu" unless you want the song stuck in your head for the next three weeks. You have been warned.

The Hours
Based on a book "The Hours" which is about a book "Mrs Dalloway" and how it links three women from different periods. One is the author of "Mrs Dalloway", Virginia Woolf. This film is about as literary as you can get. A slow pace allows clever cinematic links between the different time periods and the stories that link the three women. For some this may seem dull and too slow. Perthaps like watching someone slowly peel an apple, it can also be fascinating as the peel comes off in one continuous sinuous strip, to reveal the fruit inside. We begin to see how the contemorary woman preparing a party for her prizewinning Aids ridden poet friend reflects the character of Mrs Dalloway in Virginia Woolf's novel. Nicole Kidman, and that nose, show the agonies of Woolf as she struggles with writing her novel and her own inner demons. In the generation between Julianne Moore's character reads Mrs Dalloway as she confronts her own unhappy life. Inter-female relationships link all the characters including Meryl Streep's 'Clarissa', who shares her name with Mrs Dalloway and lives with her female partner in modern New York. A later plot twist brings some of the threads together. A good film. Well written by David Hare. I thought Julianne Moore's character of Laura Brown had the most poignancy for me and also her performance, which seemed the least recognised in general critical review. A good wet sunday afternoon film if ever there was one.
